Wi‑Fi. Router. Modem. Ethernet. If those words all get thrown around as if everyone should already know what they mean, this one is for you.

We have started a plain-English tech series for Waiheke homes and small businesses. Part 1 explains what Wi‑Fi actually is, where it fits in your home, and why a better “modem” does not always mean better Internet.

Some technology words are used so often that everyone quietly pretends to understand them. Wi‑Fi is one of those words.

This is the first post in our plain-English series on the tech questions people always wanted to ask, but perhaps regretted asking because the answer came wrapped in acronyms. The aim is simple: help you understand the devices you have invited into your home, what they do, and how to have a more useful conversation when something stops working.


First: Wi‑Fi is not the Internet

Wi‑Fi is the wireless part of your home or business network. It lets your phone, laptop, smart TV, printer and other devices connect to your router without a cable.

The Internet is the wider world outside your property: websites, email, streaming services, cloud storage and everything else. Wi‑Fi is usually just the last little hop inside your home or office. When people say “the Wi‑Fi is down”, the problem could be the Wi‑Fi signal, the router, the fibre/Starlink/broadband connection, or the service provider. They are related, but they are not the same thing.


Why is it called wireless?

Long before phones lived in pockets, radio was often called “the wireless” because it worked without a wire. Wi‑Fi follows the same basic idea: your device talks by radio instead of being physically plugged in.

A wired network uses a cable. A wireless network uses radio. Either way, the job is to move data from one place to another.


The wired version: Ethernet cables

Before Wi‑Fi became normal, computers in homes and offices were connected with network cables. You may still hear people call these Ethernet cables, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, RJ45 cables, patch leads or, in everyday language, computer cables.

In plain English, they are usually talking about the cable that plugs into the back of a computer, printer, TV, router or network switch. Strictly speaking, Ethernet is the networking technology, Cat5e/Cat6 describes the cable category, and RJ45 is the name people commonly use for the plug on the end. The exact technical naming can get fussy; the practical point is that it is the wired alternative to Wi‑Fi.


Where the router fits in

In the early days of home Internet, one computer could dial into the service provider using a modem. Once homes started to have more than one device, the network needed something in the middle to share the connection and send the right data to the right place. That device is the router.


A router does what the name suggests: it routes traffic. It lets several devices share one Internet connection, keeps track of which device asked for what, and sends the reply back to the correct device. It also usually provides important security functions, such as a firewall.


These days many people call the whole box from the provider a “modem”. In reality, that box may be doing several jobs at once: modem or fibre hand-off, router, firewall, network switch and Wi‑Fi access point. A later post in this series will untangle modems, routers and fibre boxes properly.


Wi‑Fi lets devices connect to your local network over radio waves. Your router or access point broadcasts a network name, often called an SSID. Your phone or laptop joins that network, proves it has the right password, and then sends and receives data without a cable.


A helpful way to picture it is this: your email, video call or playlist gets broken into small messages. Those messages travel through your local network, then out to the Internet, then back again. Wi‑Fi is one way those messages can travel across the room. Ethernet cable is another. Under the bonnet, Wi‑Fi and Ethernet are different standards, but they work together so your devices can reach the same services


Will Upgrading you Wi-Fi Fix all of your speed issues?

Good Wi‑Fi can make your home or business feel much better connected, but it cannot solve every problem by itself.


If the Internet connection coming into the property is slow, better Wi‑Fi will not magically make the outside connection faster. If the router is hidden in a cupboard, blocked by thick walls, or trying to serve too many devices from one corner of the building, the signal may still struggle. If an older device only supports older Wi‑Fi, it may not benefit from the newest equipment.


Mesh systems can help in some homes, but for larger properties, hospitality venues, home offices, workshops and multi-building sites, properly placed access points with cable back to the router are often far more reliable.


A useful way to describe your problem

When asking for help, try separating the symptom from the guess. Instead of saying “the Internet is broken”, tell your IT person what you see. For example:

  • The Wi‑Fi signal disappears in the bedrooms.

  • The TV buffers, but only in the evening.

  • The laptop is fast when plugged in with a cable but slow on Wi‑Fi.

  • The phone shows full Wi‑Fi bars, but websites still will not load.

  • The guest Wi‑Fi works, but the EFTPOS or office computer drops out.

Those details help narrow down whether the issue is signal coverage, router performance, interference, device limits, Internet speed, or something else entirely.
